Backflow Prevention Device Testers Course
This course has been designed to train plumbers in the commissioning, testing and repairing of backflow prevention devices. It is a practical based program that uses predominantly hands on adult learning techniques. It will provide participants with the understanding, knowledge and skills to perform correctly specified tasks.
Courses will be conducted in rural areas at the local TAFE Institute or other suitable venue provided viable student numbers are available.
This course comprises of 24 hours of theory, 12 hours of practice (testing), 4 hours of assessment and 16 hours of the theory component must be completed at home.

- Cross connections
- Basic hydraulics
- Operation of backflow prevention devices
- Installation of backflow prevention devices
- Hazard rating and device selection
- Irrigation backflow prevention devices
- Field testing
- Fault finding and maintenance
The Plumbing Industry Commission (PIC) will conduct the theoretical and practical assessments. - A current endorsed registration (licence) in Water Supply Plumbing
- A current registration in Water Supply Plumbing
- Currently undertaking an apprenticeship in Plumbing & Gasfitting
All modules in the student learning course reference manual should be completed prior to attending course.
Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer
You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQTF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. How to Apply
A training contract must be completed by the employer and apprentice within the first two weeks of employment. An Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) representative will visit the workplace to complete the training contract with the employer and the apprentice. This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding to eligible students.
Fees are calculated according to the level of course being studied, and the number of hours being undertaken, up to Government established maximums. Eligible students are able to access a Government Subsidised Place and certain categories of Full Fee Paying students may be able to access an Eligibility Exemption. Assistance is available in the form of VET FEE HELP or a Holmesglen Payment Plan for students who are unable to afford fee payment up front.

Qualification & Recognition
The specialised class of Plumbing (Backflow Prevention) work is an endorsement on your water licence. If you are registered in water with licence level status and you successfully pass the PIC backflow prevention exam, the commission will note the results of your assessment and will issue the specialised class of Plumbing (Backflow Prevention) endorsement when you become licensed.
On successful completion of the course a Certificate of Completion will be issued by Holmesglen.
