Prerequisites: Entry into the course is automatic for people who meet government prescribed eligibility requirements, or when there are course vacancies at time of enrolment.

Overview

This course is a post entry level certificate and provides participants with the necessary skills and knowledge that, when combined with workplace skills enhancement, enable them to perform the work function of a florist, in accordance with the National Industry Competency Standards for floristry.

Qualification & Recognition

After successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to receive the Certificate III in Floristry. This is a nationally accredited course.

Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer

Students may be able to shorten the length of their chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQTF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen.

Course Fees

Fees are calculated according to the level of course being studied, and the number of hours being undertaken, up to Government established maximums. Certain categories of students may be eligible for a Government Subsidised Place. Assistance is available for those who are unable to afford fee payment up front.

Maintain indoor plants
This competency standard covers the process of maintaining interior plant displays in buildings and offices. Maintenance involves watering, feeding and other plant treatments necessary to maintain the health and appearance of indoor plants. Indoor plant maintenance is usually performed under routine supervision with intermittent checking. Responsibility for some roles and co-ordination within a team may be required. Competency is demonstrated by the application of knowledge and skills to a range of plant maintenance tasks and roles usually within established enterprise guidelines.

Install and maintain interior plant displays
This competency standard covers the process of the installation and maintenance work associated with interior plant displays in buildings and offices. The installation and maintenance of interior plant displays is likely to be under limited supervision from others, with checking only related to overall progress. Some discretion and judgement in assessing locations, selecting equipment and materials, organisation of work, services, actions, and the achievement of outcomes within time and budgetary constraints will be required. Installation and maintenance requires the application of extensive horticultural knowledge and a broad range of horticultural skills.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare, produce and evaluate hand tied floral designs. It includes the presentation and wrapping of floral arrangements. Assemble and prepare floristry products
This unit describes the skills and knowledge to prepare, construct and present floral arrangements produced to pre-determined design specifications. This competency may apply to a range of roles in the workplace where the florist is under the supervision of an experienced florist. It does not require the development of the design specifications. This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply sales techniques and a depth of specialist floristry product knowledge to offer advice and take orders from customers either face-to-face, via electronic mail or over the telephone. This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes to operate of a variety of retail equipment. It involves identifying the correct equipment required for a given task, maintaining retail equipment, applying keyboard skills and operating data entry equipment.

This unit encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes required for effective communication with customers and other staff in the workplace. It involves establishing contact with customers, processing information, working in a team, maintaining personal presentation, following routine instructions, reading and interpreting retail documents and using numbers in the workplace.

This unit encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes required at the point of sale in any retail store. It includes operating the point of sale equipment, applying store policies and procedures to a range of transactions, dealing appropriately with the customer and packing or wrapping the item for transportation.

This unit encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to work effectively in a retail environment. It involves acting responsibly and in a non-discriminatory manner, and identifying the relevant award/agreement.

This unit encompasses the competencies required to coordinate work teams in a retail environment. It involves monitoring and organising staffing levels, informing team members of expected standards of work, coaching and motivating the team and maintaining staffing records.

This unit encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to balance the register/terminal in a retail environment. It involves clearing the register, counting money, calculating non-cash transactions and reconciling takings.

This unit encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to handle stock in a retail environment. It involves receiving and processing incoming goods, rotating stock, participating in stock takes, reordering stock and dispatching goods.

This unit incorporates the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) guidelines for occupational health and safety. It encompasses the skills, knowledge and attitudes to maintain a safe work environment for staff, customers and others. It involves observing basic safety and emergency procedures.

This unit encompasses the competencies required to minimise theft in a retail environment. It involves applying routine store security, taking appropriate action to minimise theft and maintaining security of cash, registers/terminals and keys.

This unit involves the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to sell products and services in a retail environment. It involves the use of sales techniques and encompasses the key selling skills from approaching the customer to closing the sale. It requires a basic level of product knowledge.

Recognise Plants
This competency standard covers the process of recognising plants that are commonly encountered in horticulture or land management situations. Recognising plants is likely to be under routine supervision with intermittent checking by supervisors, requires a knowledge of plant identification techniques, plant nomenclature, enterprise procedures for obtaining and supplying advice and information about plants, and enterprise expectations about the range and number of plants to be recognized.

Assessment

Assessment may be a combination of written and online assignments, tests, examinations and practical application projects.

This course will help participants explore the career opportunities that exist in the retail florist environment, or enhance their position and career options if currently employed within this industry.
Completion of this course will assist the student to gain employment as a qualified Florist.
