  • Course Overview

    This course provides comprehensive training in furniture finishing. You will learn to prepare surfaces, apply stains and finishes, restore furniture and operate finishing equipment.

    You will be taught in Holmesglen's industry recognised furnishing facilities, where an emphasis is placed on providing hands on, practical training.

  • Course Structure

    To receive this qualification you must complete 10 core units and 13 elective units. Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications. If you have already completed other eligible elective units, these may be counted towards completion of this program.

    Assessment

    Assessment will be conducted on and off the job, and will involve practical demonstration, third party report, oral questions and written activities and tests.

  • Requirements

    Recognition of prior learning

    You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen.

    Qualification & Recognition

    After successfully completing this course, you will be eligible to receive the nationally endorsed MSF30113 Certificate III in Furniture Finishing.

    Pathways

    Credit may be granted towards this qualification by those who have completed MSF20213 Certificate II in Furniture Finishing.

    Apprentices - Block Release (one week per month); non-apprentices - 1 or 2 days a week (flexible training options available).

    Apprenticeships

    A training contract must be completed by the employer and apprentice within the first two weeks of employment. An Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) representative will visit the workplace to complete the training contract with the employer and the apprentice. Contact the AAC on 13 38 73 or australianapprenticeships.gov.au for more information. On signing the apprentice will be asked to nominate the registered training organisation (RTO), such as Holmesglen, which will authomatically be notified of their intention to start training. The apprentice will then be placed on the notification list at the RTO to be contacted when the next apprenticeship group is starting.

    Which fee applies to me?

    Due to the different level of government subsidy available to you, there are three possible fee levels for program fees – government subsidised, full fee and concession.

    Your eligibility for concession or subsidised program fees is determined by your individual circumstances such as how old you are, what level of education you have and what type of program you want to study. Concession fees are not available for qualifications at diploma level or above.

    How do I pay my fees?

    VET Fee HELP / VET Student Loans is an Australian Government loan scheme that helps eligible students pay all or part of their tuition fees for diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate and graduate diploma programs.

    Holmesglen also offers a range of scholarships each year which you may be eligible to apply for.

    To be eligible for a VET Fee HELP /  VET Student Loans you will need to meet the VET Student Loans entry requirements.

    If you are curious about furniture making but not sure if it is right for you; or if you want get the skills and industry experience to set your self up for an apprenticeship, a Certificate II might be the first step.

    A pre-apprenticeship program is designed to teach you the basic skills required by industry, You'll get a taste of what the apprenticeship will involve as well as what working in the field is really like. By completing a pre-apprenticeship you'll also reduce the length of your apprenticeship.

    Visit us on Open Day at 6.30pm for a formal presentation highlighting the unique elements and importance of each of the building trades. Following the presentation there will be a tour across each of the trades workshops with teachers available to answer any specific questions.
