This is a VET Delivered to Secondary Students (previously VETiS) course and can only be completed as part of your VCE or VCAL program.
During this course, you can complement and expand your scientific studies by gaining the practical skills and knowledge to assist in collecting and preparing samples and to carry out, measure and record results of experiments in the physical, chemical, biological or life sciences. You will learn skills in maintaining a laboratory, routine sampling and testing, recording data, and using laboratory computing programs. You will also learn how to prepare cultures, perform sterile techniques and assist with field work.This course will be undertaken in the new state-of-the-art laboratories at Holmesglen Chadstone where you will have access to equipment that can usually only be found in a technical setting.
To receive this qualification you must complete 6 core units and 7 elective units. Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications.
AssessmentAssessment may be a combination of written and online assignments, tests, examinations and practical application projects.

When undertaking the course, you must be enrolled as a VCE or VCAL student.
Qualification & RecognitionThis is a VET Delivered to Secondary Students (previously VETiS) course and is part of your VCE or VCAL program.
Students who complete MSL30109 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills will be eligible for up to six units of credit towards their VCE: four units at Units 1 and 2 level and a Units 3 and 4 sequence.
Students wishing to receive an ATAR contribution for the Units 3 and 4 sequence of VCE VET Laboratory Skills must undertake scored assessment for the purpose of achieving a study score. This study score can contribute directly to the ATAR, either as one of the student's best four studies (the primary four) or as a fifth or sixth study. Where a student elects not to receive a study score for VCE VET Laboratory Skills, no contribution to the ATAR will be available.
Students wishing to receive a study score for VCE VET Laboratory Skills must undertake scored assessment. This consists of three coursework tasks, worth 66% of the overall study score and an end of year examination, worth 34% of the overall study score.
Scored assessment is based on the Units 3 and 4 sequence of MSL30109 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills.
This course leads to a qualification that articulates directly to further qualifications, including the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques, Diploma of Laboratory Technology and Advanced Diploma of Laboratory Operations.
This course is suitable if you have an interest in biological testing, biotechnology, chemical testing, environmental monitoring, food testing and pathology testing.
This course is delivered on Wednesdays, 1 pm - 4.30 pm.
