Please note: The Academic Skills Unit offers assistance with study skills and course work, not correcting and editing students' assignments.
Qualification and Recognition
In many mainstream courses, Academic Skills classes are an integral part of the curriculum. Students who participate in these classes are able to gain extra units on their statement of results. Look on your timetable on the Holmesglen intranet to see if you have a class scheduled for your course.
The following units are taught in your classes.
PTS201A: Prepare to study
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required by a learner to access learning support. In particular, it directs learners who are continuing or returning to study as to the study skills required in their main course of study and the availability of study support.
ESP406A: Develop Evaluate and adopt appropriate study practices
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required by a learner to evaluate and adopt appropriate study practices. In particular, it directs learners as to the skills required to: assess and modify existing study routines; evaluate information; use appropriate conventions when presenting work; and work effectively within a group.
ISP407A: Develop and implement autonomous study practices
This unit covers the skills and knowledge required by a learner to develop autonomous learning. In particular, it directs learners as to the skills required to: develop strategies for taking responsibility for their own learning; develop basic research skills; employ problem solving techniques; and contribute effectively to a learning environment.
VBQU161: Create a range of texts of complex texts for learning purposes
The focus of the unit is on writing skills to create complex texts which are relevant to the further study context. Its emphasis is on structured reflective and opinion texts used in a range of study environments.
