Information on the Trust

The Mick Young Scholarship Trust (MYST) provides annual scholarships for financially disadvantaged students in the fields of education, vocational training, music, art, science and literature.

The overriding eligibility criteria for a recipient of a Mick Young Scholarship is financial disadvantage combined with motivation and commitment to furthering education and improving life circumstances.

MYST scholarship funds are distributed and administered through registered educational institutions such as Universities, Institutes of TAFE and independent colleges and other institutions such as the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and the Aboriginal Education Council (NSW) Inc.

The Trust was set up in memory of the late Mick Young, a former Member of Parliament and Federal Cabinet Minister, who sought to enhance opportunities for financially disadvantaged people.

Mick's career took many different paths, from shearer to a Minister in the Hawke Government. Along the way he was a Union organiser and ALP State Secretary. He was the Federal Secretary of the ALP and organised the "It's Time" campaign which led to the Whitlam victory in 1972. Later he was advisor to Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, Federal Minister for Port Adelaide, Special Minister of State and Immigration Minister.

Mick Young promoted diversity and equality. He strongly believed education was a right not a privilege and should be accessible to all. When he left school at 15 to work in the shearing sheds his world did not offer many opportunities.

Because of this he spent his working life trying to create opportunities for others. The Mick Young Scholarship Trust was established to be true to the cause and the people he cared so passionately about.

The Trust allocated approximately $120,000 for scholarships in 2006 and assisted 198 students. In 2007 approximately $170,000 will be distributed through educational providers. In just over ten years, the Mick Young Scholarship Trust has provided over 1,000 scholarships to a total value of approximately half a million dollars to help financially disadvantaged students.

The scholarships provide funds to assist students with items such as textbooks, equipment, transport and fees. Previous recipients of Mick Young Scholarships are eligible to re-apply.
