Recreation FAQ

Why do you put on so many fun activities for students, many of them for free?
Student life is not just about getting training and qualifications that will help set you up for a good career. It is about having a balanced life, meeting other people, keeping healthy (mentally and physically), and having opportunities to broaden your life experience. The recreation activities, trips, tours and sporting activities we provide are to help you achieve this balance in your life and study.

Why are the trips and activities so cheap?
Holmesglen recognises the importance of a broader educational experience and recreation in a student's life. Holmesglen also recognises that students often don't have much wealth. Therefore, Holmesglen subsidises the cost of the activities (that is, they pay for part of it for you), so that students can afford to participate.

How do I find out about the Recreation trips, tours, and on-campus activites?
There are many ways to find out:

  • The Recreation and Activites booklet has information about our trips, tours and activities. It's available around campus and from Student Services.
  • This website has lots of information and calendars of activities.
  • Look out for our magazine HitHot Press. It comes out five times a year and is available for free around campus and from Student Services.
  • Look for posters around campus advertising current trips, tours and activities.
  • Come into Student Services and ask our Recreation Staff.

I have seen a trip/tour/activity that I want to go on - how soon can I book a place?
You are wise to book into a trip/tour as soon as possible because places are limited and they can fill fast. Bookings for each activity open approximately one month before the activity date. If you are not sure, come into Student Services and ask.

I have been told that you sell discounted movie tickets to students. Which cinemas can I use the tickets at? Which movies can I see? Are there any restrictions? How long are they valid for?
Student Services sell tickets to Hoyts movie cinemas - remember to bring your student ID card when you come to buy them. Sorry, we don't sell tickets to other cinemas. After you obtain the pre-paid ticket from Student Services, you may take them to a Hoyts cinema and exchange them for a ticket for the movie and session time of your choice. You can use them for any session except "Gold-Class" style tickets. As they are pre-paid tickets, they can be used for sessions designated as "no free list". The tickets have an expiry date, so you will need to use them before this date. We try to sell tickets with an expiry date several months ahead, but sometimes the tickets will have an expiry date within a month.
