Armed and Dangerous
In 2007 and 2008, Holmesglen students studying Vocational Certificate of Applied Learning, Certificate I in Work Education and Certificate I in Transitional Education were given the opportunity to produce their own short films for screening at the annual Armed & Dangerous Film Festival. Participating students were from a variety of educational backgrounds, including special needs, community schooling, tertiary, mainstream and non-government settings.
Armed & Dangerous is a showcase for Victorian students' film and multimedia projects screened each year as part of the St Kilda Film Festival, at the George Cinema, St Kilda.
Films completed by Holmesglen students included elements of live action, photography and stop-motion animation. Students developed skills in script writing, design and construction, character modelling, computer technology, music and performance. The two Holmesglen films screened at the festival were Believing in Yourself, and Britney Bit Me!
Holmesglen's involvement and ongoing support for projects such as Armed & Dangerous highlights its commitment to broadening the learning opportunities available to its students. The Institute's courses provide benefits far beyond the normal classroom. Filmmaking, in particular, is a medium that encourages students to work as a team, fostering a learning environment in which each member can take on a responsibility suited to their individual interests and skills.
As entertainment, filmmaking can help engage students with the wider community, giving them a platform to express opinions and ideas, and to recognise the great work that they have produced as a team.
