Tour and Research Skills Sessions

Tours and Research Skills Sessions

We tailor all of our sessions to suit the subject area and education level of each class or individual. Librarians will highlight aspects of the collection and online resources most suited to student and faculty needs. Students and teaching staff can book these sessions by contacting their branch, Liaison Librarian or filling in the online booking form.

Orientation Talks

Staff can book an orientation lecture for new students to be introduced to the services available to them through the Learning Commons by inviting your Liaison Librarians to give a short presentation at their Course Orientation or during a class. We offer a brief 10-15 minute presentation highlighting the Learning Commons facilities, as well as introducing students to the resources collected specifically for their subject area. We put a friendly face to our service and encourage students to come and make use of our facilities.

LC Tours / SuperSearch Introduction

Learning Commons' staff can take teachers and their classes for short tours of the Learning Commons introducing new students and staff to borrowing from the collection, use of student computers, photocopying, printing, and more. During the tour, librarians can also introduce subject specific library guides and SuperSearch, the online catalogue and demonstrate how to find items on the shelves and online. A tour and SuperSearch session in the Learning Commons takes 30 minutes.

Research Skills

These sessions are designed to help students start the research process. We recommend staff book a research skills session for their class when an assignment has been given to students. We tailor the session to cover any requested content or resource, to help students find relevant books, journal articles, reports, standards or statistics online and from our databases. A liaison librarian can deliver content in one session, or in several shorter sessions given over time.

Students can also book a session to assist them to begin their research assignment. This session runs for no longer than 60 minutes.

Provides a basic introduction to referencing and plagiarism or a more advanced session on referencing software, EndNote and RefWorks. These sessions are tailored to student skill level, and can provide timely support when assignments are due. For information about referencing styles offered at Holmesglen, visit our referencing page. Referencing sessions run for 60 minutes.
