Holds

Holds can be made if items are on loan or available at another branch. There is a maximum of 5 holds per person at any one time. The items can be held through  the Learning Commons website or at the Lending or Information Services desks.

Bookings

Teaching staff can book videos and DVDs for classes to ensure availability of popular items as teaching material. Every effort will be made to ensure the item is available for the booking. Bookings must be made at least 3 business days prior to the class, and must be returned the next day. Inquire at the Lending Desk for more information.

Returns

Items you borrow may be returned to any branch of the Learning Commons. The due date to return each item is printed on the receipt provided when you borrow the item. Most branches provide an external chute for returning items after hours. Equipment such as CD players and calculators should be returned to the Loans Desk rather than through the return chutes.

Cross Campus Loans

You can borrow items from other branches by inquiring at the lending desk of your nearest Learning Commons or place a hold via our website. Items will be delivered from other branches in 48 hours. Borrowed items can be returned to any Learning Commons branch.

Academic Reserve

Some high demand items may be found on Academic Reserve and are available for in house usage for  3 hours at a time. There is a limit of 2 items at a time. Students must have their own ID card to borrow Academic Reserve material. Materials kept on Academic Reserve include books and periodicals.

CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program

The CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program is a scheme whereby staff and students of participating academic libraries are able to borrow material from other participating Victorian academic libraries.

Holmesglen's staff and students are eligible to participate in this program. Enrolment at individual institutions is subject to the eligibility conditions applicable at each Host library. Ask the Learning Commons staff if you are unsure about your eligibility.

Before you go to another participating academic library to enrol we advise you to:

  • have your current Holmesglen ID with you
  • make sure there are no outstanding fines or overdue items on your Holmesglen Learning Commons account
  • be enrolled in a tertiary level course that runs at least one year in duration
  • make sure your enrolment has been finalised and can be viewed on MY.HOLMSGLEN student portal

For further information on your eligibility and responsibilities as a CAVAL borrower ask at the Learning Commons Service Desk at your branch or visit the Frequently Asked Question (FAQ's) on the CAVAL's website.

Inter-Library Loans

The service of Inter-Library Loans is provided by the Learning Commons (campus wide) to those clients who require material not available from the Learning Commons, for work and course related purposes. Please visit Inter-Library Loan policy page for more details.

Resources can be requested on Inter-Library Loan by teaching staff (free of charge) and normally takes up to 2 weeks to obtain from other libraries. To contact the Inter-Library Loan Officer, Angela Newland or Anne Gleason, phone (03)9209 5726 or email angela.newland@holmesglen.edu.au

Note: Students are normally expected to go to their respective library holding the resources to borrow or photocopy the information they require. The students can use the CAVAL borrowing system for this purpose. Inter-Library-Loan requests can however, be made by students, if they are prepared to pay all current ILL charges up front. If the loan is available from a TAFE, students are not required to pay any charges as long as the request is for course related work.
