The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language to Adults is a higher qualification for experienced (in-service) teachers and provides a pathway into English teaching work at TAFEs and other tertiary institutions.

Studying the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language to Adults (TEAL) at Holmesglen

This is a practical course designed to enable you to focus on practical classroom methodology and language awareness and relate theories of second language learning and curriculum design to the classroom.<p>You will be able to identify developments and changes in education policy at the national and international levels.<p>You will be able to prepare teaching and learning resources that will meet the needs of language learners across a range of learning environments and deliver these materials efficiently and effectively in the classroom.<p>You will also be able to develop principles for other administrative aspects of teaching. You will demonstrate an ability to deal with language learners via an on-the-job teaching practicum under the supervision of an experienced EAL teacher.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, students must be at least 18 years of age.<p>Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7) or equivalent
Initial English language teaching qualification of no less than 100 contact hours with a content focus on English language, language learning and TESOL teaching and a practical component of at least 6 hours supervised and assessed teaching practice or equivalent.<p>Language equivalence of a minimum of IELTS 7.0.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.
