Through the encouragement of a Holmesglen student, Luca Gallo enrolled in our Bachelor of Sports Media to explore her job opportunities and find a practical learning environment.

The degree connected her with a Tennis Victoria internship and secured her a full-time job.

“I discovered that the skills we learned [in the classroom] could stand up in the real world, which is a testament to the course. Being able to transition into the workforce is one of the most important things when you’re doing a degree,” Luca says of her sports media internship.

Teaching you the skills you need to find a sports media job

“A lot of institutions are trying to move towards offering practical-based knowledge. With sports media, the industry is very hands-on, which is exactly what the course offers,” Luca explains.

The Bachelor of Sports Media has four streams: sport, media, journalism and communications. Luca learned how to write articles, commentate, edit video and make Photoshop posts during her degree.

“You learn everything that you will need in a great space, and in a classroom where you know everyone,” she adds.

An internship shows you how to begin your sports media career

Our sports media students undertake a compulsory 228-hour internship in the final year of their course. Learners have completed internships with the likes of Fox Footy, Herald Sun, SEN1116, AFL Victoria, Basketball Victoria and Cricket Victoria.

Luca completed her Tennis Victoria internship over six weeks. She felt completing her internship full-time would give her a clearer picture of the sports media industry and the people who work in it. This decision led to her receiving permanent employment.

“I was writing articles for web, preparing social media graphics, attending meetings, and even appeared on TV celebrating Ash Barty becoming world number one,” Luca says.
