About the Centre

Shaping the future of care at home

The way Australians receive care is changing. More people are choosing to remain living independently at home for longer, while advances in digital health, assistive technology and new models of care are creating opportunities to deliver services in different ways.

The Home and Community Care Centre of Excellence brings together industry, education, research, technology and community to respond to this change. Based at Holmesglen's Moorabbin campus, the Centre will help translate innovation into practical workforce capability, supporting the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for the future of home and community care.

Funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments, the Centre is part of a national network of TAFE Centres of Excellence working to strengthen Australia's skills and training system.

Living laboratory

A living laboratory for care, learning and innovation

At the heart of the Centre will be the Smart Home Living Lab and Virtual Smart Home, environments where new technologies, training approaches and models of care can be explored in realistic home settings.

The Smart Home Living Lab will provide a practical environment for exploring adaptive technologies, remote care, automation, workforce learning and emerging models of care.

The Virtual Smart Home will extend access beyond the physical Centre, supporting technology-enabled learning and workforce development across Australia.

Together, these environments will help learners, educators, researchers, care providers, technology specialists, consumers and carers understand how innovation can work in everyday care.

What we do

Turning innovation into practical capability

The home and community care sector does not simply need more technology. It needs effective ways to turn innovation, research and new models of care into skills that can be applied confidently in the workplace.

The Centre will connect expertise from across the care ecosystem to help move ideas from research and testing through to learning, workforce capability and industry adoption.

Innovation and research

Explore emerging technologies, care models and practical solutions through applied research and real-world testing.

Industry partnerships

Bring care providers, technology organisations, researchers and educators together to address shared sector challenges.

Future-ready workforce

Build the practical, digital and human capabilities needed for increasingly complex and technology-enabled care.

Digital adoption

Support the responsible adoption of smart home technology, remote care and digital tools in everyday care practice.

How the Centre creates impact

From innovation to everyday care

The Centre will help move promising ideas beyond demonstration and into practical workforce education and industry practice.

Holmesglen capability

Why Holmesglen?

Holmesglen brings together expertise across home and community care, health, construction, applied research, immersive and simulation-based learning, technology and vocational education.

This combination provides an opportunity to look at home-based care as a connected system, bringing together the person, workforce, technology and home environment rather than considering each in isolation.

Through the Centre, Holmesglen can connect education with industry and research, turning emerging approaches into practical skills and workforce solutions that can be shared more broadly across the sector.
