Studying the ARC Welding - Beginners Workshop at Holmesglen

At Holmesglen, you’ll train in industry-standard engineering workshops equipped with professional welding equipment and facilities designed to reflect real workplace environments. With a strong focus on practical, hands-on learning, you’ll build confidence in welding techniques, equipment operation and workplace safety while learning from experienced teachers with extensive industry knowledge.<p>You’ll be supported throughout the course in a welcoming learning environment, whether you’re exploring welding as a hobby, starting a trade pathway or developing practical skills for future employment. Small class sizes and personalised support help you gain valuable real-world experience and prepare for further engineering or fabrication training.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this program, learners must be at least 17 years of age.
Prior to enrolment you will be required to complete a pre-training review and may be asked to complete a language, literacy and numeracy test. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course and identify any learning support needs.

Course Structure

This 2-week non-accredited program will be delivered across two Saturdays from 8.30am – 3.00pm on Saturday 1 August and Saturday 8 August.<br><strong>Topics covered</strong><br><strong>Week 1</strong><br>• Workshop and amenities tour, including exits and fire extinguisher locations <br>• Icebreaker activities and class introductions <br>• Welding hazards video followed by safety briefing and discussion <br>• Introduction to welding power sources and gas regulators <br>• Overview of welding helmets and safety equipment <br>• Introduction to gas types and cylinder identification <br>• Fundamentals of welding, including operator settings, body positioning, welding angle, speed and arc length <br>• Machine set-up and practical string of beads welding <br>• Pad welding <br>• Welding fundamental joints on 3mm low carbon steel (LCS) <p><strong>Week 2</strong><br>• Welding fundamental joints on 1.5mm low carbon steel (LCS) <br>• Welding and testing fillet welds on 10mm low carbon steel (LCS) to monitor weld quality <br>• TIG welding of fundamental joints on 3mm aluminium (where applicable) <br>• Continued practical welding activities <br>• Recap session and advice on topics including purchasing a welder, duty cycles, welding defects and weaving techniques
