At Holmesglen, you’ll learn in industry-standard engineering workshops designed to reflect real workplace environments. Whether you’re exploring welding as a hobby, developing trade skills or looking to improve employment opportunities, Holmesglen offers a supportive learning environment focused on practical experience and real-world skills.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this program, learners must be at least 17 years of age.
Prior to enrolment you will be required to complete a pre-training review and may be asked to complete a language, literacy and numeracy test. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course and identify any learning support needs.

Course Structure

TimeTable

This course will be delivered across a 2-day workshop on Saturday 22 August and Saturday 29 August from 8.30am – 3.00pm.<br><strong>Day 1 topics</strong><br>• Workshop induction, including safety, amenities and emergency procedures <br>• Icebreaker activities and learner introductions <br>• MIG welding hazards and safety briefing <br>• Introduction to MIG welding equipment, including power source, wire feeder, torch and regulators <br>• PPE and welding helmet set-up <br>• Shielding gas types and cylinder identification <br>• MIG welding fundamentals, including parameters, torch angle, travel speed and stick-out <br>• Practical machine set-up and first welds (stringer beads) <br>• Pad welding and basic joint practice on 3mm mild steel <p><strong>Day 2 topics</strong><br>• Light gauge MIG welding on 1.5mm mild steel <br>• Fillet welds on 10mm mild steel with break testing for quality <br>• Continued practical welding across joint types and welding positions <br>• Trainer coaching on welding techniques, parameter adjustments and defect correction <br>• Recap session covering MIG welder purchasing, duty cycles, common welding defects and weaving techniques

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.
