The ARC Welding – Beginners Workshop at Holmesglen is a practical, non-accredited welding course designed for individuals with little or no prior welding experience. Through hands-on training, students develop foundational ARC welding skills, including welding safety, equipment set-up, equipment operation and practical welding techniques using industry-standard tools and facilities.<p>This beginner welding workshop is suitable for tradespeople wanting to expand their skills, automotive enthusiasts, artists, people from rural or farming communities, and anyone interested in improving employment opportunities or gaining practical welding experience in a supportive learning environment.

Studying the OXY Welding - Beginners Workshop at Holmesglen

At Holmesglen, you’ll train in industry-standard engineering workshops using professional oxy acetylene welding equipment and tools designed to reflect real workplace environments. Through practical, hands-on training, you’ll develop skills in flame control, welding safety, oxy fuel equipment set-up and fundamental welding techniques while working on mild steel welding projects.<p>Our experienced teachers provide personalised guidance and practical industry knowledge to help you build confidence throughout the workshop. Whether you’re exploring welding as a hobby, developing trade skills or looking to improve employment opportunities, Holmesglen offers a supportive learning environment focused on practical experience, safety and real-world welding skills.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this program, learners must be at least 17 years of age.
Prior to enrolment you will be required to complete a pre-training review and may be asked to complete a language, literacy and numeracy test. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course and identify any learning support needs.

Course Structure

This is a 2-day workshop delivered on Saturday 10 October and Saturday 17 October from 8.30am – 3.00pm.<br><strong>Day 1 topics</strong><br>• Workshop and amenities tour, including exits, fire extinguishers and first aid locations <br>• Icebreaker activities and learner introductions <br>• Oxy fuel welding hazards video and safety briefing, including flashbacks, backfires, cylinders and fire risks <br>• Introduction to oxy acetylene equipment, including cylinders, regulators, hoses, torch body and tips <br>• Discussion on welding goggles and shade selection <br>• Gas types and cylinder identification, including oxygen, acetylene, colour codes and safe storage <br>• Explanation of flame types, including carburising, neutral and oxidising flames <br>• Demonstration of lighting and shutdown procedures <br>• Torch control practice, including angle, distance, travel speed and puddle formation <br>• Practical set-up and safe operation of oxy acetylene equipment <br>• Initial bead welding on mild steel focusing on flame control and puddle consistency <br>• Pad welding on 3mm mild steel <br>• Fundamental joints on 3mm mild steel, including butt joints, lap joints and T joints <br>• Heat control practice on 1.5mm mild steel to prevent burn-through <p><strong>Day 2 topics</strong><br>• Welding safety refresher <br>• Continued welding practice on 3mm mild steel joints <br>• Trainer feedback on flame balance, puddle control and travel speed <br>• Welding fillet joints on 10mm mild steel <br>• Testing and inspection of fillet weld samples for penetration and fusion <br>• Discussion of common oxy welding defects, including lack of fusion, oxidation, overheating and porosity <br>• Continued welding practice and skills refinement <br>• Individual coaching on flame adjustment and puddle management <br>• Final practical welding session to consolidate skills <br>• Wrap-up discussion covering regulators, torches, tip sizes, gas consumption and flashback arrestors
