The ARC Welding – Beginners Workshop at Holmesglen is a practical, non-accredited welding course designed for individuals with little or no prior welding experience. Through hands-on training, students develop foundational ARC welding skills, including welding safety, equipment set-up, equipment operation and practical welding techniques using industry-standard tools and facilities.<p>This beginner welding workshop is suitable for tradespeople wanting to expand their skills, automotive enthusiasts, artists, people from rural or farming communities, and anyone interested in improving employment opportunities or gaining practical welding experience in a supportive learning environment.

At Holmesglen, you’ll train in industry-standard engineering workshops using professional TIG welding equipment designed to reflect real workplace environments. With a strong focus on practical, hands-on learning, you’ll develop precision welding skills while gaining experience in welding safety, torch control and equipment set-up.<p>Our experienced teachers provide personalised guidance and practical industry knowledge to help you build confidence throughout the workshop. Whether you’re learning TIG welding for personal interest, trade development or future employment opportunities, Holmesglen offers a supportive learning environment focused on real-world skills and practical experience.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this program, learners must be at least 17 years of age.
Prior to enrolment you will be required to complete a pre-training review and may be asked to complete a language, literacy and numeracy test. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course and identify any learning support needs.

Course Structure

TimeTable

This is a 2-day workshop delivered on Saturday 12 September and Saturday 19 September from 8.30am – 3.00pm.<br><strong>Day 1 topics</strong><br>• Workshop and amenities tour, including exits, fire extinguishers and first aid locations <br>• Icebreaker activities and class introductions <br>• TIG welding hazards video and safety briefing, including UV exposure, high-frequency start, gas risks and hot work safety <br>• Introduction to TIG welding equipment, including power source, torch components, foot pedal and gas regulators <br>• Welding helmet overview, including lens types, shade selection and sensitivity settings <br>• Gas types and cylinder identification, including argon, gas mixes, colour codes and safe handling procedures <br>• TIG welding fundamentals, including operator settings, torch angle, arc length, travel speed, filler rod control and body positioning <br>• Demonstration of machine set-up for mild steel and aluminium <br>• Practical welding – Stage 1 <br>• Machine set-up and bead welding using autogenous and filler techniques <br>• Focus on weld consistency, arc length control and hand stability <p><strong>Day 2 topics</strong><br>• Practical welding – Stage 2 <br>• Pad welding on 3mm mild steel <br>• Fundamental joints on 3mm mild steel, including T joints, lap joints and butt joints <br>• Basic aluminium welding joints on 3mm aluminium with AC balance discussion (where applicable) <br>• Fillet weld testing on 10mm mild steel to assess weld penetration and fusion <br>• Common TIG welding defects and troubleshooting techniques <br>• Continued welding practice and skills refinement <br>• Trainer feedback on welding technique, torch control and filler rod timing <br>• Recap of key TIG welding concepts <br>• Discussion on purchasing a TIG welder, duty cycles, tungsten selection, gas flow, and weaving versus straight welding runs
