Course Overview

The Rail Cyber Security & Operational Technology (OT) Fundamentals Skill Set at Holmesglen is a nationally accredited training program developed in collaboration with the National Transport Commission (NTC) and TAFECyber. Designed specifically for Australia's rail industry, the program builds essential cyber security knowledge and practical skills to help protect critical railway systems and infrastructure from evolving cyber threats.
The course explores IT and OT security, rail cyber threats, industrial control systems (ICS), network security, risk management and industry standards, including IEC 62443 and TS 50701. Through interactive browser-based simulations and practical scenarios, participants develop the skills to identify vulnerabilities, assess cyber risks, strengthen security practices and respond to incidents in rail operating environments.
Designed for professionals working in rail operations, engineering, maintenance, technology and cyber security, this industry-focused Skill Set provides practical knowledge to support safer, more resilient railway systems.

Career Opportunities

 • Rail operations and signals staff extending into OT security responsibilities
 • Operational Technology (OT) / ICS security roles within rail and transport organisations
 • Compliance and risk officers responsible for critical infrastructure and cyber security obligations
 • IT security personnel transitioning into rail and critical infrastructure environments

Pathway to further studies

 • The Rail Cyber Security & Operational Technology (OT) Fundamentals Skill Set provides a foundation for further study and professional development in cyber security, operational technology and critical infrastructure protection.

Studying the Rail Cyber Security and Operational Technology (OT) Fundamentals at Holmesglen

Study Rail Cyber Security & Operational Technology (OT) Fundamentals at Holmesglen and develop practical cyber security skills tailored to Australia's rail industry.
Developed in collaboration with the National Transport Commission (NTC) and TAFECyber, this industry-focused Skill Set combines specialist rail cyber security knowledge with practical learning activities.
Through interactive browser-based simulations and realistic rail industry scenarios, you'll explore how cyber security principles apply to operational technology, critical infrastructure and rail systems.
An integrated capstone exercise provides an opportunity to apply your learning to your own workplace context, helping you strengthen your understanding of cyber security risks, standards and incident response practices.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this Skill Set under the national training package.
However, Holmesglen recommends that applicants have basic IT literacy, including familiarity with computer networks, operating systems and general computing concepts.
No previous cyber security, operational technology (OT) or rail industry experience is required, as foundational concepts are covered during the course.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. Read more about Recognition of Prior Learning, Credits and Advanced Standing.
