Overview

The Introduction to Cooking course at Holmesglen is ideal for anyone wanting to build confidence and develop practical cooking skills in a supportive environment. Through hands-on cooking classes in a simulated commercial kitchen, you’ll learn to prepare seasonal dishes, including an entrée, main and dessert each week. Delivered one day per week (approximately six hours per day), the course combines guided instruction with extensive practical training. This short cooking course for beginners allows students to take home their dishes and receive a certificate of participation.

Studying the Cooking basics at Holmesglen

Studying at Holmesglen is a practical and enjoyable experience. Classes take place in modern training kitchens where you’ll learn through hands-on cooking activities and build confidence in the kitchen.<p>Our experienced and friendly teachers guide you step by step, creating a supportive learning environment where everyone can develop their skills. Small class sizes mean you’ll have time to practise techniques, ask questions and learn at your own pace.<p>Most importantly, the course is designed to be enjoyable. You’ll have fun experimenting with ingredients, sharing ideas with others and taking home the dishes you create each week

Entry Requirements

Students must be at least 18 years of age at the commencement of the course.<p>Students will receive a Holmesglen apron, chef hat and recipe book, which they can keep after completing the course. Other basic kitchen equipment and uniforms required for working in a commercial kitchen will be loaned during the course and must be returned at the end of the program.<p><strong>Safety and kitchen requirements</strong><br>Students must:<br>• Wear non-slip, food-grade shoes <br>• Follow basic food hygiene practices <br>• Comply with safe work requirements while studying in the training kitchens
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment. This will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

<strong>Course duration</strong><br>The Cooking Basics course runs for 4 weeks, delivered one day per week for approximately 6 hours per day. This duration has been designed to provide comprehensive coverage of key cooking skills while maintaining an intensive and practical learning experience.<p>Each week, learners build on the skills developed in the previous session, gradually increasing their confidence and ability in the kitchen.<br>The course is delivered over four weeks and covers the following areas:<br>• Week 1: Introduction to the kitchen, basic kitchen skills, and planning a dinner party.<br>• Week 2: Preparing the first level of dishes – 1 entrée, 1 main, and 1 dessert.<br>• Week 3: Preparing the second level of dishes – 1 entrée, 1 main, and 1 dessert.<br>• Week 4: Preparing the third level of dishes – 1 entrée, 1 main, and 1 dessert.
