Entry Requirements

To be eligible, students must be at least 16 years of age.<p>To enrol in the apprenticeship delivery program, all students must have an employer and a valid apprenticeship contract in place prior to commencement..
It is recommended you have completed Year 11 or equivalent and have a minimum of Year 10 English and Mathematics.<p>Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

Timetable

The program is structured over 21 hours of training per week across a total of 30 block training sessions over three years.<p><strong>• Year One:</strong> Focuses on foundational skills, including navigating safety requirements, developing communication skills, and teamwork. Hands-on activities introduce brick wall and corner preparation and laying, providing a strong base for more complex tasks.<br><strong>•Year Two:</strong>Builds on first-year knowledge with practical activities like constructing brick steps, stairs, and structural systems. Fire-rated masonry construction processes are also introduced.<br><strong>•Year Three</strong>Focuses on advanced techniques, such as constructing fireplaces, chimneys, and mastering intricate methods like arches, curved brickwork, and decorative designs.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

How to apply

Apprenticeship

Additional Course Cost

Students will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when undertaking practical activities. The personal protective equipment and course materials students will be required to supply are: <br>Safety boots (steel capped, ankle height) <br>Work pants and shirt <br>Safety glasses <br>Safety gloves (when handling building materials) <br>Dust respirator to P2/P3 standard <br>Fold-out ruler Notebook, HB Pencil, blue or black pen, eraser <br>BYO Device-Laptop $400 <br>The total cost of these items is between $650 - $750 <br>If additional safety equipment is required, it will be supplied by the Institute.
