Course Overview

The CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) develops the knowledge and skills required to coordinate and manage building construction projects, including selecting contractors, supervising construction work and quality, and liaising with clients. The course covers key areas including building codes and standards, construction contracts, structural principles, building materials, estimating, project safety and quality management.<p><p>You'll build your understanding of residential and commercial building construction, with learning informed by current industry practices and the National Construction Code (NCC). The qualification may also support your pathway towards meeting the requirements for building practitioner registration in Victoria, subject to the requirements of the relevant Victorian building regulator.</p>

Study the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) through a flexible learning environment that combines remote facilitated sessions, independent study, online learning and practical on-campus activities.<p>You'll learn with experienced Holmesglen building and construction teachers, applying construction principles to practical industry scenarios and working with documents such as building plans, specifications, contracts and project documentation. Learning focuses on applying the National Construction Code (NCC), building standards and construction practices to residential and commercial building projects.<p>Online learning is supported through <a href="https://www.holmesglen.edu.au/current-students/course-resources/it-help-and-online-tools#accordion-a099c8bf38-item-2b760ff310">Brightspace</a>, while scheduled facilitation gives you opportunities to ask questions, discuss course content and receive guidance from your teachers as you progress through the qualification.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or equivalent.<p>The course is suited to applicants with relevant building and construction experience, including tradespeople and those working in construction supervision, estimating, planning, contract administration, project coordination, engineering, drafting or building inspection.<p><strong>Pre-Training Review</strong><br>All applicants must complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) to determine course suitability, discuss previous industry experience and identify the most appropriate delivery option.<p><strong>Language, literacy and numeracy</strong><br>Applicants must demonstrate appropriate language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills, with a minimum of:<br>• Literacy – ACSF Level 3 <br>• Numeracy – ACSF Level 3 <p>Applicants who cannot provide suitable evidence of their LLN skills will be required to complete a BKSB Initial Assessment.<p><strong>Additional requirement for blended delivery</strong><br>Applicants seeking blended delivery must demonstrate relevant practical industry knowledge through a mandatory face-to-face assessment at Holmesglen. This assessment cannot be completed remotely or online.
Please note: Students are required to hold a <a href="https://www.holmesglen.edu.au/explore-courses/business-and-finance/work-health-and-safety/vocational-education/prepare-to-work-safely-in-the-construction-industry-white-card">Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card)</a> (CPCCWHS1001A Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry) in order to take part in mandatory assessments or site-visits.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. To obtain the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), you must successfully complete 27 units, including 24 core units and 3 elective units. Elective units have been selected by Holmesglen based on industry feedback and trainer expertise. Previously completed eligible elective units may count towards the qualification.<p><strong>Blended delivery assessment pathway</strong><br>Students undertaking blended delivery must complete two consecutive eight-week blocks of supervised, face-to-face assessment at Holmesglen, aligned with the February, April, July and October intakes.<br>• Block 1.1: CPCCBC4012 and CPCCBC4014 – construction plans, specifications, sketches and drawings. <br>• Block 1.2: CPCCBC4001, CPCCBC4053 and CPCCBC4009 – building codes, standards and construction materials. <p>Students who successfully complete both blocks can continue with blended delivery, with completed units credited towards the Diploma. Students who do not achieve competency following one reassessment will transition to the full-time delivery stream for additional structured classroom support.<p><strong>Blended learning</strong><br>Blended delivery combines self-paced study with scheduled remote facilitation, including teacher guidance, discussions and collaborative activities. Some practical activities and assessments require compulsory on-campus attendance, including inspections, land surveying and contractor supervision.<p>Learning resources and assessments are provided through <a href="https://www.holmesglen.edu.au/current-students/course-resources/it-help-and-online-tools#accordion-a099c8bf38-item-2b760ff310">Brightspace</a>. Students must also have access to relevant workplace documentation, such as construction drawings, contracts and quotes, to complete assessment activities.

Additional Course Cost

As blended delivery students are expected to be already working in the industry with direct access to a building site, on-site excursions do not form part of this delivery mode. However, PPE is required for the mandatory, on-campus practical assessment sessions outlined in the Entry Requirements section. <br> <br>Required PPE for on-campus practical assessment: <br> <br>Safety boots (steel-capped, ankle height) <br>Safety pants <br>Work shirt (waist-length jacket, if cold) <br>Safety glasses <br>Hat for sun protection <br>Sunscreen (if exposed to sunlight) <br>Safety gloves (if handling building materials) <br> <br>Detailed consumables and equipment lists will be provided to students upon enrolment. Computers are available in tutorial classrooms. <br> <br>USB-connected headset, when using classroom computers for on-campus assessment — $55 <br> <br>Recommended other items: <br> <br>Recommended book — George Wilkie: Building Your Own Home — $40 <br>Recommended for study — a suitable home computer capable of running the Microsoft suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Office 365 is available for free. Microsoft Project is available on classroom computers.
