The Certificate III in ESI – Rail Traction covers the installation, maintenance, and inspection of systems such as overhead poles, conductors, cables, and rail traction wiring. The program also includes training on rail traction height access equipment and low-voltage electrical apparatus. Training is delivered through a blend of classroom theory and practical tasks in a training yard set up to simulate industry conditions. Holmesglen’s experienced teachers provide expert guidance and support, helping students develop the skills and knowledge needed for the industry. The course also includes self-paced study, allowing students to extend and reinforce their learning outside of on-campus hours, preparing them for a successful career as rail traction lineworkers

Entry Requirements

This program is designed as an apprenticeship for Distribution Overhead - Rail Traction apprentices. To enrol, all learners must be employed by a provider in the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI), Rail Traction sector, and registered as an apprentice with that ESI provider.<p>Applicants must be at least 16 years old to meet the minimum age requirement for training and working in the Electrotechnology field in Victoria, as determined by the Energy Safe Victoria (ESV).
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training, apprentices will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining suitability of the course, verify the training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Additional Course Cost

Due to the high risk nature of the work, the PPE and equipment required by apprentices and workers in this industry are supplied by employers, in accordance with the award.
