Kickstart your IT career with the Certificate III in Information Technology, designed for secondary school students. Learn game design principles, game art, asset creation, game animation, game testing, and IT help desk support, building skills for IT support roles and game development careers. Delivered over 24 months through a flexible blended learning model, students can attend face-to-face or live-streamed online classes, with remote learners supervised via a parent or guardian Statutory Declaration, creating a pathway to Certificate IV and higher IT studies in Australia.

Studying the Certificate III in Information Technology at Holmesglen

This two-year program is designed for secondary school learners undertaking VET studies as part of their school enrolment. Learners will complete the Certificate III in Information Technology qualification and have the option of undertaking a Scored Assessment. The course is hands-on, beginner-friendly, and structured to introduce students to professional IT skills and tools while having fun creating games and game art.<p>In the first year, students learn to manage personally identifiable information (PII) and create 3D models using industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, and Substance Painter. They develop original 3D game art and animations and showcase their work in a video game using a game engine.<p>In the second year, learners expand their skills with foundational programming and IT support. They learn to install and optimise operating systems, provide system administration, create backups, maintain and repair hardware and software, and install, configure, and secure a small office network. Over five subjects, students gain practical experience, supported by experienced teachers, and are prepared for the VCE examination and future IT and game development careers.

Entry Requirements

Holmesglen requires learners to be enrolled as a VETDSS or VCE VM student in secondary school.<br>Learners undertaking this program must have digital literacy skills and the ability to:<br>• Turn on a computer<br>• Connect to the internet<br>• Use a mouse, keyboard, headset with microphone or speakers, and webcam<br>• Open and close a software application<br>• Conduct searches in a web browser<br>• Send and receive emails<br>• Save a file and locate a saved file<br>• Download and install software applications

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

This hands-on, beginner-friendly course introduces high school students to professional IT skills while having fun creating games and game art. Over two years, students study five subjects covering game design, 3D art, programming, and IT help desk skills. The course uses a flipped learning approach, giving students all resources at the start of class to prepare and study in advance.<br>Subjects:<br>• Intro to 3D: Explore how 3D graphics for video games are created. Gain hands-on experience with 3D art software and design original game assets.<br>• Game Design: Build on 3D skills to texture, animate, and present 3D art in a game using the Unity Game Engine.<br>• Foundation Programming: Learn the basics of programming to make video games interactive, adding unique features and functionality.<br>• IT Support 1: Develop foundational IT support skills for a wide range of technology roles.<br>• IT Support 2: Learn to install, configure, and secure network components in a small office or home office (SOHO) environment.<p>Secondary school students who complete the ICT30120 Certificate III in Information Technology will be eligible for up to two units of credit at Units 1 and 2 level and at Units 3 and 4 sequence.
