Overview

The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (VETDSS) is designed for VCE or VCE Vocational Major students interested in working with young children. This course develops practical skills to support children’s learning, wellbeing and development in early childhood settings. Delivered through a blend of classroom learning, online study, simulations and work experience, students learn about legal and ethical requirements, play-based learning and working effectively with families and educators, providing a strong pathway into further study or employment in early childhood education.

Pathway to further studies

  • There are no pathways into this qualification. Upon partial completion, learners are encouraged to enrol in the full program to complete the CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Studying the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care at Holmesglen

At Holmesglen, VCE and VCE Vocational Major students gain practical skills to support children’s learning, development and wellbeing in early childhood settings. The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care combines classroom learning, online activities and simulated early learning environments to build skills in engaging with children, supporting play-based learning, understanding legal and ethical requirements, and working effectively with families and educators.<p>Learning is hands-on and interactive, using role plays, simulations, project work and structured work experience across a range of early childhood settings. Students are supported by experienced educators and work closely with their school coordinator throughout the program, helping them build confidence, communication skills and a strong foundation for further study or employment in early childhood education and care.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to be enrolled in Year 11 or Year 12 in a Victorian Secondary School for entry into this program.<p>For work experience a current Working With Children Check card is required for students 18 years of age or older. It is recommended that all students obtain the card. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination may be required by individual centres/businesses.
<strong>Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) requirements</strong><br>Learners are not required to complete the standard LLN assessment prior to commencing this course. Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Timetable

Classes run from 1.30pm to 4.30pm - Wednesday (one day per week on campus)<br>Placement opportunities will be discussed in class.<p>Please note that the timetable is subject to change.<p>Students wishing to obtain the CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care will be required to complete additional units and formal placement hours.<p>To receive the full qualification, you must complete 15 core units and 2 elective units. Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.
