The Trades Academy VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) at Holmesglen Vocational College is a two-year program for students aged 16–18, designed for those interested in trades and construction careers. The program combines hands-on vocational learning with VCE VM core units and a Certificate II in Construction Pathways, building strong employability skills. Students gain practical experience and are supported to progress into apprenticeships, traineeships or further trade training while completing their Year 12 studies

Studying the VCE - Victorian Certificate of Education at Holmesglen

Entry Requirements

• Must be 16 years of age by 30 April to be eligible for enrolment<br>• Preferred candidates will have completed Year 10 at a secondary school<br>• Learners under 17 years of age must submit a School Exemption form, authorised by their previous school principal, in line with Ministerial Order 705<br>• Additional approval from the Department of Education Regional Director may be required where applicable<br>• Prior to enrolment, learners must demonstrate their interest and capability to engage in VCE VM through a pre-training interview, previous school reports, school recommendations, and/or BKSB results
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

Timetable

The Trades Academy VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) program is delivered four days per week, with all classes held at the Chadstone Campus.<p><strong>Weekly delivery</strong><br>One day per week (Year 11) is dedicated to the Certificate II in Construction Pathways, with classes conducted from 9.00am to 4.00pm.<br>The remaining three days per week are allocated to VCE VM core units, with classes running from 9.00am to 2.30pm.<p><strong>Year 11 units</strong><br>Students are enrolled in:<br>• Literacy (LT031, LT032)<br>• Numeracy (NM031, NM032)<br>• Personal Development Skills (PD031, PD032)<br>• Work Related Skills (WR031, WR032)<br>Students are also enrolled through the Trades department in the Certificate II in Construction Pathways, enabling them to achieve two VET credits at Certificate II level or above (minimum 180 nominal hours).<p><strong>Year 12 units</strong><br>Students are enrolled in:<br>• Literacy (LT033, LT034)<br>• Numeracy (NM033, NM034)<br>• Personal Development Skills (PD033, PD034)<br>• Work Related Skills (WR033, WR034)<p><strong>Completion requirements</strong><br>To be awarded the VCE VM, students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 16 units, including:<br>• 3 VCE VM Literacy units<br>• 2 VCE VM Numeracy units<br>• 2 VCE VM Work Related Skills units<br>• 2 VCE VM Personal Development Skills units<br>• 2 VET credits at Certificate II level or above (180 nominal hours)<br>Within these requirements, students must also complete four Unit 3–4 sequences, including Literacy.<p><strong>Apprenticeship and traineeship support</strong><br>Students will be supported to undertake a traineeship or apprenticeship alongside their Year 12 core units.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

On completion of all course requirements learners will receive the Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) and the CPC20220 Certificate II in Construction Pathways

The General Services Fee (GSF) at Holmesglen is a mandatory annual fee applicable to all students enrolled in Certificate I through Advanced Diploma courses. Additional Course Cost

$300 activity fee per year for all learners ($150 per semester - excursions, activity costs and learner consumables) <br> <br>There are additional fees for the construction component of the course, please refer to the department for specific costs.
