Studying the Operating Theatre Technician Specialisation at Holmesglen

This Operating Theatre Technician skill set is delivered at the Moorabbin campus and provides comprehensive training to prepare graduates to assist health professionals in an operating theatre.<p>This skill set will prepare learners to perform the following tasks within an operating theatre environment:<br>- positioning and repositioning patients during surgical procedures<br>- preparing and maintaining an operating room and its equipment<br>- assisting the surgical team during procedures<br>- assisting patients in the recovery room<br>- comprehend and adhere to the sterile field in the operating room.<p>All our units are taught by practicing health professionals who are current and have a wealth of experience in the hospital and theatre technician environments.<br>  <br>Your learning will be delivered in a blended environment supported by a range of hands-on practical classes on campus. Blended theory classes are delivered both online and on campus and include tutorials and engaging activities. Practical sessions are conducted in our simulated allied health health services facility, with access to simulated operating theatre and hospital environments.<p>Whether you are enrolled in the 3 unit skill set only or the HLT33115 Certificate III Health Services Assistance Operating Theatre Technician Specialisation, which includes the addition of the 3 unit skill set, at the end of the course, learners will undertake a compulsory two-week industry placement arranged through the Holmesglen Clinical Placement Office. This two-week placement aims to give learners the opportunity to gain valuable industry-specific work experience. This experience is an opportunity to both solidify the training undertaken at Holmesglen as well as improve the learners chances of finding employment upon completion of the course.

Entry Requirements

<strong>Entry Requirements – HSSHLT0006 Operating Theatre Technician Specialisation Skill Set</strong><p>Entry is offered on a fee-for-service basis. Applicants must either hold the HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance or have completed/enrolled in the 12-unit partial qualification at Holmesglen.<p>All applicants must be 18 years or older, complete an online LLN assessment, participate in a Pre-Training Review (PTR) interview, and demonstrate clear English communication skills. ACSF Level 3 competence in English literacy and numeracy is required.<p><strong>Pre-Placement Requirements:</strong> Submit documentation via InPlace by Week 4, including: Immunisation Record (Hepatitis B, C, A Ab, HIV, MMR, Varicella, DTP, Polio, Tuberculosis, COVID-19 booster, Influenza), Employee Working with Children Check (WWCC), and National Police Check (issued within 3 months). Failure may delay placement.<p>Learners should have a personal device and headset for online learning via Brightspace and Webex and be able to work in teams, follow instructions, problem-solve, and stand for long periods with fine motor control.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Taught two days a week, Thursday and Friday, for 14 weeks from 8am - 3.30pm followed by two weeks of clinical placement.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

Qualification and Recognition

The HSSHLT0006 Operating Theatre Technician Specialisation Skill Set is not a standalone qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Learners who are enrolled in the skill set only will receive a Statement of Attainment for the three completed units upon successful completion.
