The MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills (VDSS) is designed for Year 10–12 students with an interest in science and laboratory work. This VCE VET course introduces essential laboratory skills, including sampling and testing, data recording, laboratory safety and the use of scientific equipment. Delivered at Holmesglen’s Moorabbin campus, students gain hands-on experience in real laboratory environments while complementing their VCE studies and building pathways into biotechnology, environmental science, food testing and further science education.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in high school or an equivalent program. Learners are required to complete a 30-minute handwritten entry assessment under teacher supervision at their home school. Calculators are permitted. The assessment confirms course suitability by evaluating learner motivation, understanding of laboratory work, and foundational literacy, numeracy and scientific skills required for the MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills.<p><strong>Literacy and numeracy requirements</strong><br>Learners must demonstrate skills equivalent to ACSF Level 2, including the ability to:<br>• Interpret workplace documents such as procedures, safety instructions and data sheets<br>• Communicate effectively in written and verbal formats<br>• Produce clear reports, instructions and records<br>• Apply mathematical reasoning to measurements, ratios, concentrations and data interpretation<br>• Use appropriate mathematical language to explain results<br>Targeted LLN support will be provided where required.<p><strong>Digital literacy requirements</strong><br>Learners should have Digital Literacy Level 3 skills to access and participate in online learning. This includes the ability to:<br>• Use computers, email and internet-based systems<br>• Download and use required software applications<br>• Retrieve, verify and calculate scientific data using formulae<br>• Present information using tables, charts and graphs<br>• Maintain accurate digital records and troubleshoot basic technical issues<p>Digital literacy is not assessed prior to enrolment but is assumed through online application and completion of the entry assessment, confirming access to a computer or tablet, email and internet.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training.
