Learner rights and obligations

As a Holmesglen learner, you are at the centre of our community. Your unique background, experiences, and strengths help shape our culture, and how you participate makes a meaningful difference for your success and everyone around you.

Your responsibilities

All members of the Holmesglen community are expected to follow our Code of Conduct. Here’s a summary of our learner responsibilities.

Take responsibility for your learning and conduct

  • Comply with all Holmesglen policies and course requirements
  • Take ownership of your learning and wellbeing
  • Keep your personal details accurate and up to date
  • Read and respond to official correspondence
  • Be punctual, participate actively, and complete all assessment tasks
  • Conduct yourself professionally during off-campus activities
  • Follow host organisation policies during placements

Act with honesty and integrity

  • Undertake academic work with integrity, avoiding breaches of academic integrity and copyright
  • Work cooperatively with other learners and staff
  • Do not engage in fraudulent, corrupt, or unlawful behaviour
  • Report misconduct if you observe it
  • Declare any conflicts of interest
  • Do not make false or misleading statements about Holmesglen

Act with respect and fairness

  • Interact politely and respectfully with all community members
  • Communicate with courtesy in person and online
  • Provide honest feedback about learning and support services
  • Maintain confidentiality and privacy as required
  • Respect others' rights to their opinions and beliefs
  • Embrace diverse identities, perspectives, and experiences
  • Avoid disrupting teaching, learning, or academic activities
  • Do not encourage others to breach this code

Contribute to a healthy and safe learning environment

  • Take responsibility for your own wellbeing
  • Never act in ways that could harm yourself or others
  • Do not engage in discrimination, harassment, bullying, or violence
  • Wear required personal protective equipment
  • Be free from the influence of alcohol and drugs
  • Do not use, possess, or supply prohibited substances or weapons
  • Only smoke or vape in designated areas
  • Use Holmesglen property and resources appropriately
  • Report unsafe conditions and concerning behaviours
  • Follow safety instructions and participate in emergency procedures

Where these standards apply

These behaviour standards apply everywhere you go as a Holmesglen learner:

  • On campus
  • Online (including social media and learning management systems)
  • During placements and workplace learning
  • On excursions, study tours, and educational exchanges
  • At camps and recreational activities
  • At all Holmesglen events

Reporting concerns

If you experience or witness behaviour that doesn't meet our Code:

  1. Talk to your education manager or Student Wellbeing first if possible
  2. Follow the complaint process
  3. Report serious misconduct immediately, including: 
    • Threats to health and safety
    • Harassment, bullying, or discrimination
    • Violence or property damage
    • Fraud or misuse of resources

Remember: It's safe to speak up! Holmesglen is committed to protecting those who report concerns.

Consequences for breaching this Code

We will deal with breaches of this Code in accordance with our child safety, learner complaints and discipline policies. Breaches of this Code may result in disciplinary action including expulsion in serious cases.

Support services are available for learners experiencing difficulties or barriers to learning. We encourage you to reach out early—asking for help is always supported. Information about support services is available here, or you can speak to your teachers or Student Wellbeing.
