Emma Jepsen

Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician

Emma transitioned into the electrical trades while studying for a commerce degree in University, seeking a challenging, intellectually engaging career with good work life balance. After securing an apprenticeship and completing her degree through night classes, Emma found her niche in a complex and rewarding industry.

She began working with Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT), contributing to a case study on issues apprentices face, such as gender bias, limited school exposure, and employer support. Her insights helped shape recommendations for the Taskforce.

Through her platform @sparkyjep, Emma shares real-life experiences as a female electrician, inspiring others and breaking down barriers. Her long-term goal is to run her own business and mentor young women, creating opportunities for future generations in trades.

Rebecca Niclasen

Certificate II in Carpentry

Winner of the 2024 Master Builders Inspiration Award, Rebecca’s journey reflects resilience, skill, and advocacy. Despite facing serious financial hardship after a failed knee surgery, Rebecca remained determined to continue with her training. Her dedication to her career and community makes her a powerful role model for women entering the trades.

Balancing motherhood and a career in carpentry, Rebecca worked up to 37 weeks in her pregnancy, inspiring other women in trades. She’s also been a panellist at the Career Practitioners Seminar and supported Holmesglen’s Women in Trades promotions, using her story to encourage others.

Rebecca has recently contributed to the Victorian Government’s Apprenticeship Taskforce, helping improve pathways for future apprentices.

Sebastian Blacket

Certificate III in Landscape Construction

Sebastian’s dedication to landscaping is driven by a genuine passion for sustainability and a deep appreciation of Australia’s native environments. His focus lies in creating visually appealing spaces and promoting eco-friendly, naturalistic designs.

Recognised early for his potential at Holmesglen, Sebastian earned the chance to compete in the WorldSkills competitions. After performing strongly at the regional level, he advanced to the national stage as East Melbourne’s representative.

At the 2024 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show he impressed the judges with his Achievable Garden entry, which creatively reused an old bathtub from a goat farm and a vintage door. His thoughtful design earned him a bronze medal and third place in the People’s Choice Awards.
